The sole purpose of airport runway and taxiway markings is simple: to increase visibility and decrease runway incursions. Reducing the risk of runway incursions is one of the Federal Aviation Administration’s top priorities (FAA Runway Safety Fact Sheet – October 2008). According to the FAA, a contributing factor to runway incursions is loss of situational awareness. Having accurate and highly visible markings is one way to greatly reduce these types of problems.
